Man of Medan

Cinematic Horror·Supermassive Games·2019

The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan is a cinematic horror experience from Supermassive Games, plunging players into a chilling tale of survival aboard a ghost ship lost in the South Pacific.

About the Score

Because the story takes place in modern times, Jason created a hybrid score that balances orchestra and synthesizers roughly equally. For the nautical setting, he associated the rocking motion of the sea with a 1-2-3 pulse, so he built essentially the entire score around triple-meter rhythms and time signatures. He described the resulting musical character as flowing and “swishy,” almost like a sea shanty on the open ocean.

Jason and Supermassive Games audio director Barney Pratt also approached Man of Medan as the beginning of a larger musical language for The Dark Pictures Anthology. Jason deliberately kept those connections subtle: Man of Medan and Little Hope, for example, share a related chord progression and thematic musical DNA, but each score reshapes those ideas to suit its individual story and historical setting.

One of the most appealing scores by Jason Graves.
