Murdered: Soul Suspect

Supernatural Mystery·Square Enix·2014

Murdered: Soul Suspect is a supernatural mystery thriller that casts players as Ronan O’Connor, a detective murdered in the line of duty who must solve his own killing from beyond the grave. Trapped between life and death, Ronan uses ghostly abilities to investigate crime scenes, possess the living, and uncover dark secrets in the haunted streets of Salem. Jason composed Murdered: Soul Suspect around the idea of a ghost world: eerie, intimate, investigative, and suspended between life and death. The core palette was string quartet and percussion, creating what Top Score described as an “eerie sonic world” for the game. A key part of the sound was Jason performing the textural string writing himself, playing violin, viola, cello, and bass. North Carolina Symphony members were hired for the more melodic and beautiful string material, resulting in raw, handmade ghostliness paired with moments of fragile emotion.
