Resistance: Burning Skies
Resistance: Burning Skies is a first-person sci-fi shooter set during the Chimera invasion of the United States, following firefighter Tom Riley as he fights to protect his family and survive a brutal alien occupation. Built for PlayStation Vita, the game brings the Resistance series’ alternate-history warfare, inventive weapons, and desperate human struggle to a portable front line of explosive action.
About the Score
Jason composed Resistance: Burning Skies with Kevin Riepl, shaping the score as a classic, emotional, theme-driven orchestral action score rather than a horror score. Jason described it as more of a “good old-fashioned adventure score with aliens," contrasting it with the darker tension-building approach of Dead Space.
The score was written under a very fast schedule: the team had over an hour of music to record in less than four weeks with live orchestra. Sony wanted “a classic, emotional, theme-driven score,” with more than an hour of music recorded by a 60-plus-piece orchestra.
A central idea was the main theme. Jason wrote the initial four-note melody, and Kevin Riepl threaded those four notes through much of his own material so the score would feel unified. Jason said the theme request was for 90 seconds of music, but he wrote three and a half minutes because it was “so much fun” and had a quiet, emotional quality.
“It’s rare to come across a portable score with such lavish production values.”
