Action·Crystal Dynamics·2013

Tomb Raider is a cinematic action adventure that follows Lara Croft’s origin story, stranding her on a deadly island where she must fight, explore, and endure her transformation from survivor to legend.

About the ScoreCreating The Sound Of A Survivor

Jason gives Lara's origin story a powerful musical identity, blending emotional orchestral writing, ritualistic percussion, and a distinct bespoke instrument. From intimate moments of vulnerability to sweeping action and ancient mystery, the music mirrors Lara’s transformation from shipwrecked survivor to legendary adventurer.

Jason commissioned a playable sound sculpture called “The Instrument,” designed and constructed by sculptor Matt McConnell in collaboration with Jason and Crystal Dynamics.

Rather than resembling a conventional musical instrument, it was an imposing assemblage of wood, glass and different metals, incorporating resonant glass bowls, metal pipes and other surfaces that Jason could strike, scrape, bow and rub. It produced the strange, primitive and otherworldly tones associated with Yamatai and the island itself.

Jason featured The Instrument during the game’s first 15 minutes, particularly for Lara’s escape from the Scavenger’s Den. Its purpose was to place the player in a completely unfamiliar sonic environment before the piano and solo cello introduced Lara’s new theme.

One of the first must-own soundtracks of 2013. Graves has created something special.
